finding yourself (but not really)John Grady leaves home in Texas to go to Mexico with his friend Rawlins to essentially experience a manlier version of Eat Pray Love. Even though he kills a man in prison, loses the love of his life, and kidnaps a Mexican ranger he doesn't really change.

The grass isn't always greenerEven though John Grady heads to Mexico to do what he has always been doing, he expects to find a less complicated place but finds the same bureaucratic corruption as in the states, along with an unreasonable focus on tradition that leads him back to the U.S.

Necessity of PersonificationWhen John Grady is found with no one in various situations throughout the book, he still has the reliability of a horse. While he doesn't attach human qualities to animals like other people, he still relies on his horse to keep him sane.
